On Saturday 10th May, around 50 people gathered in Weymouth for a peaceful protest in support of trans rights. The demonstration was organised in response to the UK Supreme Court ruling on 16th April, which attempted to clarify the legal definition of “biological sex” under the Equality Act 2010. Many campaigners have expressed concern that this decision could negatively impact the rights and protections of transgender individuals.
The protest, held in a calm and respectful manner, was attended by members of the local community, as well as representatives from UNISON and the National Education Union (NEU). Demonstrators held signs and banners affirming the rights and dignity of trans people, and called for the government to ensure that transgender individuals are treated with fairness, respect, and equality.
Speakers at the event expressed disappointment at the ruling and urged ongoing solidarity and action to protect LGBTQ+ rights. The protest highlighted the strength of local support for the trans community and the importance of maintaining inclusive protections within the law. It also served to underline the despair many trans, intersex and non-binary people now feel as rights are stripped back due to the ruling.
